I have a theory, so bare with me here. My theory goes like this: In the USA - wherever teacher unions are strongest, the level of illiteracy is highest. How's that for a bit of wisdom? Yup, teachers unions are all about me, me, me and stuff the kids they're supposed to, like, educate. Unions discourage competition which would weed out the worst and reward the best. No, they believe in the opposite - let the bad take over and destroy and hey, presto, you have illiterate kids to continue the cycle. Nearly half of Detroiters are functionally illiterate yet the teacher union there is the strongest than anywhere else in the country..... I wonder why...there just must be some correlation I'm not missing here. Apparently functionally illiterate means that people can't fill out forms or read what's on a bottle. I don't call that functional anything - I call that bloody illiterate. So, once again the Detroit mayor et al leads the way on how not to run a city. Did I mention the et al and the mayor are Black? In fact, click here to peek at all the mayors of Detroit and you'll note that Coleman Young was the first Black Mayor (1974-1994) and all successive Mayors since then have also been Black. This also correlates with the time that Detroit started taking a dive as a city. Hmmmmm.....Can someone - anyone - point me in the direction of ONE Black-run American city (actually, add any Democrat-run city) that is functionally successful? Of course the only problem with having an illiterate population is that the ordinary, hard-working, tax-paying folks are exposed to increased crime, domestic violence, youth anti-social behavior, poor education and to top it all, the welfare, welfare, welfare mentality. No wonder Whites have fled the city taking their money with them, leaving a bankrupt city behind. But, hey, they say ignorance is bliss, so Detroit must be a very blissful city - if a bit poor and illiterate....Hat tip: Rextrut DETROIT (WWJ) – According to a new report, 47 percent of Detroiters are ”functionally illiterate.” The alarming new statistics were released by the Detroit Regional Workforce Fund on Wednesday.
WWJ Newsradio 950 spoke with the Fund’s Director, Karen Tyler-Ruiz, who explained exactly what this means.
“Not able to fill out basic forms, for getting a job — those types of basic everyday (things). Reading a prescription; what’s on the bottle, how many you should take… just your basic everyday tasks,” she said.
“I don’t really know how they get by, but they do. Are they getting by well? Well, that’s another question,” Tyler-Ruiz said.
Some of the Detroit suburbs also have high numbers of functionally illiterate: 34 percent in Pontiac and 24 percent in Southfield.
“For other major urban areas, we are a little bit on the high side… We compare, slightly higher, to Washington D.C.’s urban population, in certain ZIP codes in Washington D.C. and in Cleveland,” she said.
Tyler-Ruiz said only 10 percent of those who can’t read have gotten any help to resolve it.
The report will be used to provide better training for local workers.
